NHDP Grassroots Newsletter – 1/22

View this email in your browser

Dear Friend,

This weekend over a thousand people participated in Women’s Marches across New Hampshire. Commemorating the one year anniversary of the original Women’s March, Granite Staters came out in spades to show Republicans that we will not stay silent as they work to implement their radical and dangerous agenda.

The attendance at these rallies was a testament to the sheer energy and excitement that has overtaken New Hampshire. It’s that same energy that led our party to 8 special election wins in 2017, and it’s what will help New Hampshire Democrats take back the State Legislature, Executive Council, and Governorship this November.

Check out some incredible pictures from the marches across New Hampshire in the Social Media section of our newsletter!

Please continue to use this regular newsletter as a tool for your local committee meetings or as a supplement to your own regular newsletter.

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have.
Best,

Sue Ford                                                                  Sarah Guggenheimer

Priority Hearings

School Vouchers

Tuesday, January 23rd, 1:00PM / Finance II, Division Work Session / Room 209, Legislative Office Building

HOUSE – Finance II – SB 193, relative to establishing school vouchers

Why this matters: Following the House vote to move forward with SB 193, the Finance Committee will convene to discuss the fiscal impact in a work session that is open to the public but will not accept testimonials. SB 193 is a school voucher bill that would divert funds away from public schools, sending the money instead to places like the Tri-City Christian Academy, which banned a student who was on track to be valedictorian because he was transgender. This bill would also harm disabled students since private schools are not required to be ADA compliant.

Gender Confirmation Surgery for Minors

Tuesday, January 23rd, 1:15PM / Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs / Room 205, Legislative Office Building

HOUSE – Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs – HB 1532, prohibiting gender reassignment surgery for minors

Why this matters: This Republican-sponsored bill is a blatant attempt to infringe on the rights of transgender people. It is completely unacceptable that legislators would try and prevent anyone from undergoing a procedure to confirm their gender identity because of their age. This bill is, unfortunately, perfectly in line with the New Hampshire Republican Party that forcibly tabled a transgender civil rights bill last year.

Be sure to call your State Representative and Governor Sununu’s office (603-271-2121) directly, to register your opinions on these important issues.

If you’d like to attend one of these hearings or find out when the next session will take place, email Sue Ford (sueford06@gmail.com) for more information.

Platform Committee

The NHDP Platform Committee will prepare and propose the New Hampshire Democratic Party Platform for 2018-2019 to the State Convention. Committee members will travel the state to hold over a dozen public hearings with the Party membership prior to preparation of the proposed Platform. There will be multiple work sessions that all members must attend as well. Please keep in mind that with this position comes real dedication and time commitment.

If you would like to apply for a position on the Platform Committee, please email Amy Kennedy at akennedy@nhdp.org along with your resume and topics of interest by February 1st, 2018.

If you would like more information on the Platform Committee, please refer to the NHDP Constitution HERE.

Sununu Reality Check

Check out Sununu Reality Check, a project we designed to hold Governor Sununu accountable for his out-of-touch policies that favor his family, friends and corporate special interests when he should be fighting for working families. We’re tired of his phony bipartisan doublespeak and his ‘aw shucks’ act, so we’re saying enough is enough. We’re focusing on five key issues: education, the economy, health care, the environment and ethics.

If everyone knows what Sununu’s real record is, we can make him a 1-term governor. Follow along on TwitterFacebook, and check out and share our website (SununuRealityCheck.com) to stay updated and spread the word.

As we enter the 2018 legislative session, we will need all hands-on-deck to push back on the Republican leadership who have already made it clear that they will focus on restricting voting access, pushing through corporate tax cuts and other priorities that the people of New Hampshire do not want. My job over the next year as the NHDP Grassroots Chair will be to keep local Democrats informed and engaged during the 2018 legislative session, and I need your help!
