** ———————————————————— Dear Friend,
On Friday, Governor Sununu said he “hated” HB 372, a Republican-driven disenfranchisement bill that would force voters to declare residency upon registration, effectively a poll tax that would discourage legally eligible young voters from participating in democracy.
Thanks to immense public pressure, Sununu is being backed into opposing this bill, but until HB 372 is pulled or vetoed, we must continue to remind Governor Sununu and Republican legislators that this bill is a blatant attack on students’ legal right to vote in New Hampshire.

Last month, we launched Sununu Reality Check, a project designed to hold Governor Sununu accountable for his out-of-touch policies that favor his family, friends and corporate special interests when he should be fighting for working families. We’re tired of his phony bipartisan doublespeak and his ‘aw shucks’ act, so we’re saying enough is enough. We’re focusing on five key issues: education, the economy, health care, the environment and ethics.
With an incredibly successful 2017 coming to a close, I know we can make Sununu a 1-term governor but that means making sure everyone knows what his real record is. This bill would also harm disabled students as private schools are not required to be ADA compliant or have special needs teachers. SB 193 will now go the floor of the House in January for a vote.
On November 28th, an amendment to House Bill 372, authored by Republican Senators Regina Birdsell and Jim Gray, passed the Senate Election Law Committee on a 3-2 party-line vote. The bill would redefine “domicile” status for voting purposes, effectively forcing registrants to declare residency upon registering to vote, chilling the right to vote for college students in New Hampshire. By forcing students to declare residency, this bill would act as a de facto poll tax, moving the goal posts on students who are legally allowed to vote in New Hampshire.

============================================================ Copyright © 2017 NHDP Grassroots Chair, All rights reserved. As we enter the 2018 legislative session, we will need all hands-on-deck to push back on the Republican leadership who have already made it clear that they will focus on restricting voting access, pushing through corporate tax cuts and other priorities that the people of New Hampshire do not want. My job over the next year as the NHDP Grassroots Chair will be to keep local Democrats informed and engaged during the 2018 legislative session, and I need your help!
